Newave sensorSolutions developed the patented wave antenna, the only antenna specifically designed for item-level RFID setting a new standard for accuracy, versatility and efficiency. The wave antenna is newave’s core Platform Technology designed to enable RFID Solutions not previously possible (link to Solutions page). The wave was developed by the world-class ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL) of The Ohio State University (OSU), a pioneer in RF research and development under the direction of newave’s Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Dr. Dennis Burnside who was formerly the Director of the ESL. The wave was developed and produced in close partnership with Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC), the Taiwan-based global leader in antenna manufacturing. Newave’s management team leverages a strong heritage in RFID as well as senior management business expertise in variety industries globally.
A Brief newave History
Newave was founded in 2010 by Dr. Den Burnside, an Emeritus Professor at OSU and the former Director of OSU’s ESL. Dr. Burnside is an internationally renowned expert in RF technology. The wave platform was created at the ESL by Dr. Burnside and his colleague, Robert Burkholder PhD EE and a shareholder in and advisor to newave.
The development of the wave antenna platform was financially supported by WNC. WNC is the exclusive global manufacturer for the wave antenna and a significant investor in newave and participates on newave’s Board of Directors (BOD). WNC is well positioned to commercialize the wave technology platform in Asia as well as with their global client base.In 2010, newave established its Innovation Center (IC) in Plain City (Columbus), Ohio where newave can provide live demonstrations of numerous proprietary RFID real-world, wireless item-level RFID solutions. The IC also serves as a newave’s incubation laboratory for new RFID solutions, resulting in the creation of five patent approvals and with more intellectual property (IP) under development. After the wave antenna, newave and WNC jointly and exclusively own all RFID IP created by either company.
Patents & Awards
Newave has exclusive North American commercialization rights to the wave and all RFID patents. For the rest of the world newave and WNC share global commercialization rights for all RFID IP. Newave and WNC jointly own patent approvals for the newave Smart Shelf, newave’s autonomous nobel™ reader, the newave Smart Inventory Management System (SIMS)™ and newave’s smartGarment™.
Newave has partnered with Taiwan based WNC to manufacture the newave wave antennas and nobel reader. WNC is one of the world's largest, highest quality and competitive cost antenna manufacturers. WNC shares the belief that the wave Platform Technology is a "game changer" for the emerging RFID industry that will enable explosive global growth in all item-level RFID market segments.

Newave was born out of years of research conducted at The Ohio State University's ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL). The ESL is a major "Center-of-Excellence" within The Ohio State University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. ESL is one of the largest Radio Frequency (RF) university-based research laboratories in the world. In fact, much of the original radio frequency research was completed by ESL for the benefit of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), which includes the creation of the Stealth systems. Dr. Den Burnside, the CTO of newave was the principle in developing the commercial application wireless research as the Director of the ESL. This experience has resulted in a unique RF understanding and revolutionary patented RF products that can advance RFID applications to the next level. https://electroscience.osu.edu
